Co-op donates $67,000 to Portage Skate & Snow Park

We are pleased to announce Co-op is giving $67,000 to the Portage Community Revitalization Corporation (PCRC) and Portage Parks Committee to develop their skate and snow project. The new skate and snow park project will include features that will be selected by youth from the community. There will also be extra features such as a sliding/snow board hill for the winter.

The new skate and snow park in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba is one of 15 projects that have received a portion of $1 million as a 2023 recipient of Co-op Community Spaces.

Co-op Community Spaces aims to help protect, beautify and improve spaces across Western Canada that relate to recreation, urban agriculture and environmental conservation. Co-op Community Spaces was launched in 2015. In its nine years, $12.5 million has been invested in 175 projects across Western Canada.

“We’re very excited to partner with the PCRC and Portage Parks Committee. Having a free, year-round, easily accessible, safe, centrally located activity for children, youth and families to enjoy will be an asset for our community. Investing in our community is central to our values as a Co-op. Partnering with community groups on important projects like this is a natural fit. We are creating beautiful spaces for our community to enjoy now and for years to come,” said Trent Schidlowsky, General Manager of Homestead Co-op.

“The Portage la Prairie Parks Committee is so grateful for the contribution of $67,000 towards the skate and snow park project through the Co-op Community Spaces program. Youth from our community will be impacted by this grant for years to come with the build of a well-designed park where they can skate, scooter, bike and slide. We are so happy to partner with Homestead Co-op and Federated Co-operatives Limited on this project,” said Melissa Draycott, Chair of the Portage la Prairie Parks Committee.

The giving program is administered by Federated Co-operatives Limited on behalf of more than 160 independent retail co-operatives across Western Canada that form the Co-operative Retailing System.
